From the Archives: Ad Sketches

From the Miss Jackson's archives:

I was looking through the archive books this morning, and I came across this original pen & ink/watercolor sketch for an ad; it's from a time when the majority of our adverting art was hand drawn in house. Any guesses what year it was sketched?

My Floppy Hat / Last Spring's Big Splash Photo Shoot

I love this picture so much; it was shot by Nathan Presley last February at Big Splash Water Park in Tulsa for the store. I used the images for ads and web stuff during the spring 2012 season. This was a couple of months before the park actually opened, so all of the pools were empty, and the whole place had a really desolate, weathered look to it. They give everything a brand new paint job every year closer to opening day, but I really liked the faded and peeling paint. (It's kind of post-apocalyptic, now that I think about it.) Anyway, I loved everything from this shoot, and I couldn't remember if I even posted any of this last year.

Also, I just bought this hat:

I don't know why it was still here... too floppy and wide for most people's taste, maybe? I don't really care; I've always liked it, and they were handing out a very rare additional discount on lingering sale stuff for employees, so I bought it. We're going to be in Galveston in a few weeks for my cousin's wedding, and it's comin' with me.

Here are some more favorite shots from that shoot:

Jordan Best from the store did the model's makeup (Raegan from Linda Layman Agency); it was styled by me and Stacy Suvino (with lots of help from Shannon Schroeder, Wren Shelton, and the photographer's crew).

Lounge chair shots: Kate Spade dress, Kelsi Dagger shoes, House of Harlow sunglasses, Eric Javits hat.
"No Running" shot: Salvatore Ferragamo shoes and Nanette Lepore pants.
Dinosaur shot: Averardo Bessi dress, Raoul belt, Kate Spade bag, Sam Edelman shoes.
Pool shot: I can't remember who that dress was by! Ferragamo shoes, House of Harlow sunglasses.
Flying Ponytail shot: Raoul dress, Claudia Lobao necklace.

Rifle Paper Co. Notebook Set

Set of three Rifle Paper Co. notebooks; found them @ Target this weekend.

(Just realized that's two Target-related posts in a row.)

That's what $12.99 gets ya.

I started shopping for sunglasses at Target asking myself the question, "Which of these do I like?" and ended asking "Which pair is the least scratched?"

Not sure, but my Target might have a feral cat problem.

Luigi Colani (?) Yellow Globe Lamp

Sean found this awesome thing on eBay: it looks like a cartoon space helmet, no?

It may have been designed by a guy named Luigi Colani, who is better known for designing Alfa Romeos that look like spaceships, amoebic plastic chairs, and elaborate non-airworthy aircraft prototypes. (He also has a handlebar mustache and dresses like a Cloud City extra from The Empire Strikes Back.) Anyway, if nothing else, it was inspired by some extremely similar pendant lights that Colani definitely designed.

He's responsible for a lot of other eccentrically mod things: tvs, this piano that Prince has, pod kitchens...

Yes, that's what I mean by "pod kitchen". A kitchen in a pod.

I'm not sure who the target market for this "Satellite Kitchen" prototype for Poggenpohl was; here's an odd video of it making a lady shrug in slow motion. Anyway, Colani doesn't seem like the kind of guy who cares too much about marketability or practicality. My light (if he did in fact design it) is probably the simplest, most functional thing in his oeuvre.

"The Moon" Book Page

I bought this little print (really, a book page) from this fun etsy shop full of maps and botanical prints and really great drawings of bugs.

(My favorite story about the moon is "The Skyscraper to the Moon and How the Green Rat With the Rheumatism Ran a Thousand Miles Twice," by Carl Sandburg. It's in here.)

Front Bedroom Lighting Options: Whites

Norm69 pendant // via bodie and fou  // I like this one; a poor man's Louis Poulsen artichoke light. You can get it in different sizes, too.

The Maskros pendant lamp from IKEA; this one's probably too big for the room, but I really love it. Also it casts a crazy shadow, and there's already plenty happening on those walls. Maybe a bit much.

These vintage globe lights are usually pretty easy to find on the secondary market, and in lots of different sizes. I like the simplicity; I'm just not sure if I want to go that simple.

What's there now, you ask? A little contractor's basic ceiling fan and light combo with faux wood laminate blades, brushed brass, and tulip-shaped frosted glass. Get the idea? Good, because I don't want to take a picture of it. It's the same one we (still) have in our bedroom, and probably the same as the ones we removed from the kitchen and the living room. You remember the one in the living room, attached precariously and dangerously low to the beam in the center of the room? Well, my forehead remembers it.

Anyway, it looks all the more goofy because its way off center on the ceiling: almost tucked into the corner. The room would have originally had a simple little bullet sconce, so the off-center placement would have made a lot more sense. Now it just looks like a crazy person did it.

I don't really want to pay an electrician to move the wiring to the center of the room (that kind of thing isn't easy, since we don't have an attic), so I'll just swag the new fixture over to a hook in the center of the room.

Okay lets throw this one into the mix, too: another Normann Copenhagen assemble-it-yourself lamp: the Norm03. The smallest available version of this is 21 inches wide, which is kind of big for a small room, but it's squatty: just 13 inches high. And this room has higher ceilings than the other bedrooms, so maybe it won't seem overwhelming.
